So… Moira

So two exciting things happened today. First, WordPress 4.9 was released, with a lot of fun features that cause headaches for the support team. Fortunately for me, Overwatch released their new hero, Moira, today, thereby incentivizing me to replace my support team headaches with an entirely new and exciting type of headache!

Moira is a support character who can heal and harm at the same time. Well, not exactly at the same time, but I think you know what I mean. Holding R2 causes her to use her left hand (side note: argh) to heal allies, which depletes her biotic gauge. You can then hold L2 to use her right hand (side note: argh!) to harm an enemy while simultaneously healing yourself and filling the biotic gauge again. She can also fire out a biotic sphere that bounces around the battlefield; she chooses whether the sphere will heal or harm when she fires it.

Since I’m a Bronze player with all of 22 minutes of experience with her, I’m obviously qualified to talk about playing her. First off, she’s not that great in some team comps; because she doesn’t have the mobility of Mercy or Lucio, she struggles on teams that play off-point a lot. Better players than me can use the sphere to mitigate that, but I suck, so…

I also found that she struggled a bit with skinny and/or fast heroes like Tracer; it was a bit hard to get the healing spray on them because it doesn’t lock on like the harming beam does. Again, better players will be able to handle it, but I suck, so…

She is really fun to play, though, and the biotic sphere is definitely the most fun part of her kit. I like how it emphasizes map knowledge because you’ll be able to do some really cool things with it if you know the angles. I can already see some funny things happening on maps like Ilios, first point on Horizon Lunar Colony, Nepal, and first point on Hanamura.

For the first time in a while, I was actually somewhat proud of the Overwatch community. I managed to snag Moira in three games this afternoon and I didn’t have anyone who left the game because they didn’t get to play her. I applaud you, the PS4 Overwatch community, who managed to meet the bare minimum standards of decency for once. You should all be very proud of yourselves.

Anyway, there’s my 22-minute analysis of Moira. Please leave a comment so you can tell me all about how I’m playing her wrong, and if you’re feeling really frisky, tell me all about how I could play her better.
